From the Principal
Yesterday was the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
After the Virgin Mary died, God took her to heaven to be with the risen Christ.
Father in heaven,
all creation rightly gives you praise,
for all life and all holiness come from you.
In the plan of your wisdom
she who bore the Christ in her womb
was raised body and soul in glory to be with him in heaven.
May we follow her example in reflecting your holiness
and join in her hymn of endless love and praise.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Bullying No Way
Bullying – important conversations to have with your child
This week we have been participating in the Bullying No Way: National Week of Action.
By working collaboratively within our community, we can collectively help reduce bullying.
Parents and carers play an important role in helping your child understand bullying, and know how to respond to it.
If your child tells you about things at school, or you observe something in public that involves conflict or bullying, take the opportunity to talk about what bullying is. You can learn more about what defines bullying at the Bullying No Way website (link below).
Questions you could ask:
- What do you think bullying is?
- Have you seen it? How did you feel?
- Have you ever felt scared at school because of bullying?
- As well as me, who are the other adults you would talk to when it comes to things like bullying?
- Have you or your friends left other kids out on purpose? Do you think that was bullying? Why or why not?
- Have you ever tried to help someone who is being bullied? What happened? What would you do if it happens again?
Remind your child that bullying is never okay and discuss how they can respond safely if they experience or witness it.
Encourage them to seek help from a trusted adult and keep seeking support if needed.
By promoting open communication, we empower children to stand up against bullying and create a safer environment where everyone can feel that they belong.

SunSmart
As we approach the warmer (and sunnier) months of the year, the shade sails will be re-installed above the playground area soon.
We are now in the “No Hats, No Play” part of the year (UV levels are 3 or higher). Sun protection measures (sunscreen and hats) must be used each day when outside (recess and lunch breaks and classes held outdoors). Children are being reminded regularly to bring their SunSmart sun hats* to school.
- Any child without a suitable sun hat will sit in the shaded area during recess and lunch times.
- The school does not supply spare hats, unless required for class activities.
- Peak caps and visors are not suitable hats as they do not provide adequate protection from UV to the face, ears and neck.
- School sun hats can be purchased from Cambrelle’s.
Think UV, not heat.
- Temperature does not affect UV radiation levels.
- UV radiation can be high even on cool, windy and overcast days.

Sunday’s Gospel
John 6:41-51
In John 6:41-51, Jesus addresses the doubts of the crowd who struggle to understand His claim of being the "bread of life" sent from heaven. Their confusion stems from knowing Jesus' earthly origins, yet Jesus invites them to look beyond the physical and perceive the spiritual reality He offers.
Jesus’ statement, "I am the living bread that came down from heaven", emphasises His divine mission to bring eternal life. The bread He offers is more than physical sustenance; it is His very self, given for the life of the world. This passage challenges us to deepen our faith and trust in Jesus as the source of true, everlasting nourishment.
By partaking in this "bread," we enter into a relationship with Jesus that sustains and transforms us. This reflection invites us to move beyond surface-level understanding and embrace the profound spiritual truth that Jesus is the essential nourishment for our souls, offering us eternal life.
Our Josephite Heritage
The Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, often called the "Josephites" or "Brown Joeys", were founded in Penola, South Australia, in 1866 by Mary MacKillop and the Rev. Julian Tenison Woods. In 1949, three Josephite sisters arrived in Nhill to open St Patrick’s School. In 1978, the Sisters of St Joseph informed the Nhill Parish that they would no longer be able to maintain their role within the school.
We endeavour to honour our Josephite heritage through the regular presentation of the Little Joey awards at our assemblies. In support of this we also include a reflection from Mary MacKillop on our newsletter each week.
By the Numbers
106 - A Texas man reclaimed his Guinness World Records title by going skydiving at the age of 106 in May this year.
Another good win by Port last weekend has us sitting in second position going into this weekend’s Showdown against the clowns. Whilst the clowns have won the past three Showdowns, there is much to be gained for Port tomorrow night as we look to consolidate second spot and a home qualifying final. C’arn Port!!
God Bless you all.

Classroom and Student News
Junior Class News
Welcome to Week 5!
I feel that we have just started the term, and yet we are officially half way through this term already. The F/1 students reached their special milestone of 100 days brighter on August 1st and had a fabulous day celebrating. In Maths, the F/1 students have been working hard learning about 2D shapes. They have been learning to identify their names, and how many edges and corners they have. Students then designed and created their own shape animals which are displayed in our walkway. Come check them out! The F/1’s have also been working on subtraction and learning the vocabulary involved to aid in their comprehension, which, in maths, helps students work through problems.
This week is Bullying: No Way! week. In class, the F/1’s learnt what bullying actually is; they played a Kahoot, acted out scenarios and had conversations around the topic. Here are some things the students have written about bullying:
- Don’t be mean to other people (Harlow)
- Don’t hurt other people’s feelings (Charlotte. K)
- I understand what bullying is. It is a repeated behaviour (Avery)
- I’m not going to be a bully. (Brodyn)
We hope you all have a fabulous weekend. It’s meant to be a wet one, so stay dry!
100 Days of School Gallery
School Wide Positive Behaviour Support SWPBS
Throughout the day, staff monitor for students demonstrating aspects of Respect, Responsibility
and Safety within our school. Students are issued a ticket to place in their classroom container. During assemblies, a draw takes place and those who have their ticket drawn out are invited to place a marble in their House container. The House with the most marbles at the end of each term will be rewarded.
Congratulations to all children who were recognised for their positive actions around the school. This week Charlotte K, George and Daniel B were randomly drawn from the nominations for Respect, Responsibility and Safety, and have added tokens to their respective Houses' tallies.
Little Joey Awards
We continue to acknowledge the significant role of the "Brown Joeys" in the establishment of St Patrick's School, and recognised Matthew P and Jayden with Little Joey awards.
Our Little Joeys receive a certificate, sticker and a voucher/goods donated by a local business. We are very grateful for the contributions from our local businesses.

Our Mission
Child Safe Standards
The Child Safe Standards began in Victoria in 2016. The 11 Child Safe Standards are designed to help keep children safe from abuse and harm. Organisations working with children must comply with these Standards.
The Commission for Children and Young People have produced a plain language guide for the Standards which will be shared through our newsletter.
All students enrolled at St Patrick’s School have the right to feel safe and be safe. The safety and wellbeing of children in the school’s care will always be our first priority and the school will not tolerate child abuse. The school will create a child-safe and child-friendly environment where children are free to enjoy life to the full without any concern for their safety. Particular attention is paid to the most vulnerable children and young people, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, those from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds, children with a disability, children who are unable to live at home, international students, and LGBTQIA+ students. The full policy can be accessed via our school’s website: https://spnhill.catholic.edu.au/policies-procedures
The school’s Child Safety Officer is the Principal, Mr Kingsley Dalgleish.
We are committed to continuous improvement in our approach to child safety and well-being and welcome feedback from families and members of our school community on ways we can further strengthen our child safety policies, procedures, and practices. If you have any suggestions, comments, or questions, please contact the Principal either by phone or email principal@spnhill.catholic.edu.au
SchoolTV
School Survival Series
Students today have very busy schedules all-year round and it’s a very different experience for the current generation. The digital revolution has changed the way kids learn and study, with information available to them 24 hours a day.
There are many strategies that students can implement to help them get through the school years but it is also important for parents understand how to support their child. This is essential during times of transition and exam time, not only emotionally, but also practically. This series aims to offer parents, and students, advice on how to minimise stress levels and the overall impact on family life.
Every year, the media exposes us to the hype and pressure relating to school related stresses. However, putting things into perspective for students and parents alike, can help prevent everyone getting overwhelmed.
