From the Principal
75 years ago, Sr Adrian and Sr Catherine Teresa opened the doors of the JP Ryan Hall and, in doing so, opened St Patrick’s School to the first intake of students. 32 students started at the school in February 1949 and on Sunday we will be celebrating 75 years of continuous Catholic Education in Nhill.
There has been some wild weather this week and we keep Sacred Heart Primary School in Casterton in our thoughts as their school has been severely damaged by the storms on Wednesday night. Unfortunately they have had ceilings collapse in a number of rooms, significant water damage and are without power.
Hopefully our farmers have not been too affected by the weather.

Around the School
School has been a busy place this week, despite having two days without classes.
On Monday and Tuesday we had a visit from Rapid Tree Solutions who came and trimmed back some of the trees and removed dead limbs where necessary. We also had Carey Covers come and put up our shade sails again in readiness for the summer weather (presumably it is coming!). We also needed to deliver items for judging at the Nhill Show. Yesterday was Show Day and today all students are attending “You Are a Doughnut” at Horsham Town Hall.
We are also preparing for our celebrations on Sunday.
Greater Western Athletics
Congratulations to AJ and Daniel B who competed in the Greater Western Region Athletics in Ballarat last Friday. The boys qualified for the Championships based on their results at the West Wimmera and Little Desert Championships last term.
Daniel finished 7th overall in the Triple Jump and AJ was 10th in the 100m. These are outstanding results given that they were competing against the top performers from across all schools in Western Victoria. (Daniel’s jump from the West Wimmera Championships would have placed him third in the Greater Western Championships!)
UPCOMING EVENTS
75 Years of St Patrick’s School
On Sunday we will be gathering with past students, staff and families to celebrate 75 years of St Patrick’s School.
Mass will be held in the St Patrick’s Church at 11am with involvement from our students. After Mass we will move across to the school hall for the official welcome and presentations. The community will then be welcome to wander through the classrooms and school building to speak with current students and staff members. The portable has also been set up with a number of photo albums and displays.
Several parents will be cooking sausages and we thank Luv-A-Duck for the use of their barbeque.
It is anticipated that the day’s events will conclude around 2.30-3.00pm.

Sunday’s Gospel
Mark 10: 17-30
In Mark 10:17-30, a rich young man asks Jesus what he must do to gain eternal life. Jesus tells him to follow the commandments, which the man says he has done. But then Jesus challenges him to give up his wealth and follow Him. Saddened, the man leaves, unable to part with his possessions. Jesus then teaches that it is difficult for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God, but with God, all things are possible.
This passage reminds us that following Jesus requires more than just obeying rules—it asks for a deep commitment, a willingness to let go of things that might distract us from fully trusting in God. For us, this could mean thinking about what might hold us back from following Jesus wholeheartedly. Are there habits, desires, or attachments that keep us from growing closer to God? Jesus invites us to trust in Him, knowing that true fulfilment comes from following His path.
Our Josephite Heritage
The Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, often called the "Josephites" or "Brown Joeys", were founded in Penola, South Australia, in 1866 by Mary MacKillop and the Rev. Julian Tenison Woods. In 1949, three Josephite sisters arrived in Nhill to open St Patrick’s School. In 1978, the Sisters of St Joseph informed the Nhill Parish that they would no longer be able to maintain their role within the school.
We endeavour to honour our Josephite heritage through the regular presentation of the Little Joey awards at our assemblies. In support of this we also include a reflection from Mary MacKillop on our newsletter each week.
By the Numbers
113 - This year marks 113 years since the Australian Government took responsibility for the Northern Territory which had previously been governed by South Australia.
The AFL trade period has now finished and every club believes they have come out as winners. We’ll have to wait and see how our favourite players perform in different colours in 2025 before we can make a judgement. Meanwhile the Power girls have won three on the trot and take on the Saints tonight. C’arn Port!
God Bless you all.

Classroom and Student News
Senior Class News
This week has been a short but quite an action packed one. This week saw the final touches completed on all Nhill Show entries and of course, yesterday was the actual Show Day. Today the whole school has an excursion to the Horsham Town Hall to see the performance of “You are a Doughnut.”
In Literacy, the performance and what it is about has been the focus for the Senior class. As such, they have been learning about the history of comedy and entertainment duos as well as the functions of the digestive system.
In Maths, we have started the term with the topic of fractions, decimals and percentages and will continue to work on understanding how all three are related.
In Integrated Studies, we have explored the three levels of the Australian Government, looking at the roles and responsibilities of the Local, State and Federal governments.
Additionally, we have continued our exploration in Religion of the links between Dignity, Hope,Promise and Gratitude and looked at how we incorporate the idea of Dignity into our everyday lives.
Lastly, Wednesday was the first of two orientation sessions for the Grade Sixes who plan to attend Nhill College next year. The students spent the morning getting familiar with the grounds and taking classes with other Year 6 students from the local areas. The second session will be next Wednesday morning. Those Year 6 students who plan on attending St Brigid’s in Horsham will have their own orientation later this month.
As mentioned last week in assembly, and despite the wild wet weather of this week, we are heading into warmer weather for the rest of the term. As the weather warms up, please make sure your child’s jumpers and jackets are clearly labelled, as they’re likely to come on and off throughout the day. This also includes water bottles and hats.
Have a fantastic weekend and we look forward to seeing everyone ready to learn next week!

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support SWPBS
Throughout the day, staff monitor for students demonstrating aspects of Respect, Responsibility
and Safety within our school. Students are issued a ticket to place in their classroom container. During assemblies, a draw takes place and those who have their ticket drawn out are invited to place a marble in their House container. The House with the most marbles at the end of each term will be rewarded.
Congratulations to all children who were recognised for their positive actions around the school. This week April, Douglas and Tyler were randomly drawn from the nominations for Respect, Responsibility and Safety, and have added tokens to their respective Houses' tallies.
Little Joey Awards
We continue to acknowledge the significant role of the "Brown Joeys" in the establishment of St Patrick's School, and recognised Hannah G with a Little Joey award.
Our Little Joeys receive a certificate, sticker and a voucher/goods donated by a local business. We are very grateful for the contributions from our local businesses.

Our Mission
Child Safe Standards
The Child Safe Standards began in Victoria in 2016. The 11 Child Safe Standards are designed to help keep children safe from abuse and harm. Organisations working with children must comply with these Standards.
The Commission for Children and Young People have produced a plain language guide for the Standards which will be shared through our newsletter.
All students enrolled at St Patrick’s School have the right to feel safe and be safe. The safety and wellbeing of children in the school’s care will always be our first priority and the school will not tolerate child abuse. The school will create a child-safe and child-friendly environment where children are free to enjoy life to the full without any concern for their safety. Particular attention is paid to the most vulnerable children and young people, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, those from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds, children with a disability, children who are unable to live at home, international students, and LGBTQIA+ students. The full policy can be accessed via our school’s website: https://spnhill.catholic.edu.au/policies-procedures
The school’s Child Safety Officer is the Principal, Mr Kingsley Dalgleish.
We are committed to continuous improvement in our approach to child safety and well-being and welcome feedback from families and members of our school community on ways we can further strengthen our child safety policies, procedures, and practices. If you have any suggestions, comments, or questions, please contact the Principal either by phone or email principal@spnhill.catholic.edu.au

SPECIAL REPORT: The Cost of Living Crisis
In today's uncertain economic climate, parents and caregivers face the need to discuss the rising cost of living with their children, despite the instinct to shield them from life's challenges.
Starting these conversations requires choosing the right time and setting, aiming for a relaxed atmosphere. Using simple language and relatable examples, parents and caregivers can help their children understand the concept of increased expenses. Transparency about necessary budget adjustments is vital, as it is to involve children in finding solutions and fostering responsibility.
Amid these discussions, it's crucial to reassure children of your unwavering love and support. Seize the opportunity to impart financial literacy, teach your children about budgeting and discerning needs from wants. By emphasising intangible values like love and cherished memories, parents can help children grasp the bigger picture beyond monetary concerns.
Addressing financial topics with children might be challenging, but it is essential. Not only does it equip them with resilience to navigate life's complexities, but it can also effectively prepare young people to understand and handle financial matters in the future.
