From the Principal

Welcome to our first newsletter for 2025. It has been wonderful to see the students back at school. Some have grown over the holidays, some are sporting new haircuts, some lost a tooth during the break and by all accounts it sounds like they all found their way onto Santa’s “good” list!
We have had a good start to the school year with children in new classes, some with new teachers to whom they had last year, and all having new students in their class. The F-1s have also moved in to the portable building as we prepare to move out of the main building at the end of this term.
We’ve had several new students join the St Patrick’s School community this year. Jesse, Xavier H, Paweh, Sophia and Marina have started their primary schooling this year. Zion has joined us from Melbourne and is in Year 1. Makenzie has joined the Senior Class and is in Year 4.
Welcome to each of these students and a special welcome to families who are new to our school. We look forward to working together with all parents as we nurture your children’s futures.
Almighty God
We give you our school.
We give you all the teachers and staff who work here,
We give you all the children who study here.
We pray our school will continue to be a place of great discovery, adventure and creativity.
May it continue to be a place where we love to learn and where we learn to love,
A place where everyone is respected and all are deeply valued.
We ask all this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
Jubilee Year
This year is a jubilee year. Pope Francis has set the theme of the 2025 Jubilee Year as Pilgrims of Hope. In ancient times, a jubilee year occurred every 50 years and involved the cancelling of debts, a period of rest for people and the earth, and land being restored to the landless. Now, in The Catholic Tradition, ordinary Jubilees Years are celebrated every twenty five years.
Jubilee years invite Christians to set out on a journey and to cross boundaries. When people travel, they do not only change places physically, but also possibly change within themselves.

https://cafod.org.uk/news/uk-news/why-is-2025-a-jubilee-year-in-the-catholic-church
In his explanation of the the theme Pilgrims of Hope, Pope Francis reflects:
Everyone knows what it is to hope. In the heart of each person, hope dwells as the desire and expectation of good things to come, despite our not knowing what the future may bring. Even so, uncertainty about the future may at times give rise to conflicting feelings, ranging from confident trust to apprehensiveness, from serenity to anxiety, from firm conviction to hesitation and doubt. Often we come across people who are discouraged, pessimistic and cynical about the future, as if nothing could possibly bring them happiness.
For all of us, may the Jubilee be an opportunity to be renewed in hope.
Invitation to Prayer
Christ Jesus, on whom the Spirit rests,
Guide us on our journey as pilgrims of hope.
Christ Jesus, bringer of Good News,
Guide us on our journey as pilgrims of hope.
Christ Jesus, liberator of captives and all who are oppressed,
Guide us on our journey as pilgrims of hope.
Christ Jesus, restorer of sight,
Guide us on our journey as pilgrims of hope.
Christ Jesus, proclaimer of the year of the Lord’s favour,
Guide us on our journey as pilgrims of hope.
Christ Jesus, in whom the Scripture was fulfilled,
Guide us on our journey as pilgrims of hope.
Lead us all to be signs of your hope in our world.
Amen.

Safe to school
A reminder to parents to observe parking restrictions at the front of the school at all times of the day. The safety of our pedestrians (students, staff and other adults) is the highest priority. The start and end of the school day is particularly busy, and it is important that cars do not park in the restricted crossing zone that is clearly sign-posted between 8:45-9:15am and 3:15-3:45pm.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Welcoming Evening
On Tuesday evening we will be holding a Welcoming Evening for parents. This will be an opportunity to meet other families and to hear about various aspects regarding our school and school community. The evening will commence at 6.30pm (immediately after the School Advisory Council meeting) and be held in the hall.

Student Free Day
All teachers and Learning Support Officers (LSOs) will be attending Professional Learning Day in Horsham next Thursday. This will be a student-free day. No students are to come to school next Thursday. Foundation students will come on Wednesday next week to compensate for missing Thursday.

Years 3-6 Swimming Sports
The Year 3-6 students will be participating in the Nhill College House Swim Sports as the ‘fourth House’ next Friday. Mrs Bell has entered our 3-6 students into events for the day and parents are also welcome to attend. Notes will be sent out via PAM early next week.
Due to difficulties with being able to book times for us to run our own swimming program, we will run our program in Term 4 this year. Our program later this year will culminate with our own Swimming Carnival.

Student-free Days
Student-free days are days where students do not attend school within the gazetted attendance period but are designated for staff professional development, school professional development activities, planning and/or report-writing. Each year, the first day of Term 1 and the last day of Term 4 will be a student-free day in all DOBCEL schools. In exceptional circumstances, the Executive Director of Catholic Education Ballarat or delegate can approve days beyond the normal six student-free days.
Please note the following student-free days in your calendars:
- Thursday 13 February
- Wednesday 14 May
- Monday 26 May
- Friday 19 September
- Friday 19 December
All school dates are updated on the SIMON (PAM/SIMON Everywhere) Calendar.
Please note that due to Easter Monday and ANZAC Day both falling in the first week of Term 2, students will not commence Term 2 until Monday 28 April. This means they will have a three week break at the end of Term 1. Staff will be participating in Professional Learning during Week 1.

School Advisory Council
The first meeting of the School Advisory Council (SAC) is on Tuesday 11 February at 5.30pm

Our Josephite Heritage
The Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, often called the "Josephites" or "Brown Joeys", were founded in Penola, South Australia, in 1866 by Mary MacKillop and the Rev. Julian Tenison Woods. In 1949, three Josephite sisters arrived in Nhill to open St Patrick’s School. In 1978, the Sisters of St Joseph informed the Nhill Parish that they would no longer be able to maintain their role within the school.
We endeavour to honour our Josephite heritage through the regular presentation of the Little Joey awards at our assemblies. In support of this we also include a reflection from Mary MacKillop on our newsletter each week.

Junior Class News
Welcome to the New School Year!
Welcome back to all our returning families and a warm welcome to those who are new to our school community. We are excited to embark on another fantastic year of learning, growth, and memorable experiences.
Our Foundation students have settled in beautifully. It's heart-warming to see them adapting well to school routines and forming new friendships. They have been enthusiastic about bringing home their readers, which are their chosen library books for you to read and enjoy together. As they continue to learn letters and sounds, they will soon start bringing home 'reader' books to support their emerging reading skills.
Year 1 students have hit the ground running with their learning. They have shown great leadership and kindness in supporting our Foundation students, helping them feel welcomed and confident in their new environment.
In Maths, students have been exploring data in engaging ways. Year 1 students are focusing on using tally marks to collect and interpret information, while our Foundation students are learning about sharing and grouping concepts.
During InitiaLit sessions, Foundation students have been diving into the world of written words and exploring rhymes. Meanwhile, Year 1 students are reviewing previous learning and tackling new tricky words to enhance their literacy skills.
I am looking forward to our upcoming 'Getting to Know You' interviews, which are a wonderful opportunity to connect and discuss your child's progress and experiences so far.
A special congratulations to our Foundation students for completing their first full week of school! We also want to remind families that Foundation students will continue to have Wednesdays off as a rest day to help them adjust gradually to the school routine (except for next week as Thursday is a student free day).
Thank you for your ongoing support. We are looking forward to a year filled with learning, laughter, and success.
Warm regards,
Mel Kupper
Little Joey Awards
We continue to acknowledge the significant role of the "Brown Joeys" in the establishment of St Patrick's School, and recognised Jesse and Ben with Little Joey awards.
Our Little Joeys receive a certificate, sticker and a voucher/goods donated by a local business. We are very grateful for the contributions from our local businesses.

Home Reading
Students are encouraged to read frequently. At St Patrick’s School, all teachers set Reading as a homework task in all year levels.
Please read the attachment to find out how to participate in our "Home Reading Champions" program. Whenever your child reads at home, record the reading in the diary and initial it. You do not need to keep count - staff will keep a record of the number of nights.
Certificates to mark the various milestones will be presented at Thursday assembly, and these milestones will be recognised in this space in our weekly Newsletter.

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support SWPBS
Throughout the day, staff monitor for students demonstrating aspects of Respect, Responsibility
and Safety within our school. Students are issued a ticket to place in their classroom container. During assemblies, a draw takes place and those who have their ticket drawn out are invited to place a marble in their House container. The House with the most marbles at the end of each term will be rewarded.
Congratulations to all children who were recognised for their positive actions around the school. Students who were randomly drawn from the nominations for Respect, Responsibility and Safety, and have added tokens to their respective Houses' tallies, were Ben, Tyler and Elvi.

Child Safe Standards
The Child Safe Standards began in Victoria in 2016. The 11 Child Safe Standards are designed to help keep children safe from abuse and harm. Organisations working with children must comply with these Standards.
All students enrolled at St Patrick’s School have the right to feel safe and be safe. The safety and wellbeing of children in the school’s care will always be our first priority and the school will not tolerate child abuse. The school will create a child-safe and child-friendly environment where children are free to enjoy life to the full without any concern for their safety. Particular attention is paid to the most vulnerable children and young people, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, those from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds, children with a disability, children who are unable to live at home, international students, and LGBTQIA+ students. The full policy can be accessed via our school’s website: https://spnhill.catholic.edu.au/policies-procedures
The school’s Child Safety Officer is the Principal, Mr Kingsley Dalgleish.
We are committed to continuous improvement in our approach to child safety and well-being and welcome feedback from families and members of our school community on ways we can further strengthen our child safety policies, procedures, and practices. If you have any suggestions, comments, or questions, please contact the Principal either by phone or email principal@spnhill.catholic.edu.au

Reminders
School Preparations for the Bushfire Season
Each year, the Department of Education runs an annual fire risk assessment of schools and early childhood services. They are allocated a category of risk (categories 0 to 4) and are published on the Bushfire At-Risk Register (BARR).
All schools and early childhood services listed on the BARR list will also close when a Catastrophic fire danger rating day is forecast in their fire weather district.
When the Bureau of Meteorology provides public fire danger rating forecasts or fire weather warnings, they use fire weather district areas. In Victoria, there are 9 fire weather districts, which are based on Local Government Area boundaries. Our school is in the Wimmera fire weather district.
As part of preparing our school for the fire season, we have updated and completed our Emergency Management Plan and have conducted other relevant preparedness actions, such as reprioritised any maintenance works that may assist in preparing for the threat of fire and cleared our facility’s grounds and gutters.
What does this mean for our school?
Our school has been identified as being at risk of bushfire or grassfire and is listed on the Bushfire At-Risk Register (BARR).
DOBCEL, in accordance with the department’s Bushfire and Grassfire Preparedness Policy, requires our schools on the BARR list to close when a Catastrophic fire danger rating day is forecast in their fire weather district. All school bus routes which travel in or through a district with Catastrophic fire danger must also be cancelled.
Our school will close on any day forecasted as Catastrophic fire danger rating in Wimmera fire district.
Closure of the school due to a forecast Catastrophic day will be confirmed on the day prior and we will provide you with advice before the end of the school day when possible. Any information regarding potential or confirmed Catastrophic fire danger days will be communicated to you by PAM.
Once confirmed, the decision to close will not change, even if the weather forecast changes. This is to avoid confusion and help your family plan alternative care arrangements for your child/ren. It is also important to be aware that:
- No one will be on site on days where the school is closed due to a forecast Catastrophic day.
- All bus routes that travel through the Catastrophic area will be cancelled.
- School camps will be cancelled if a Catastrophic fire danger rating day is forecast for fire weather district in which the camp is located, or if the travel involves passing through areas that have Catastrophic fire danger.
In addition, families are encouraged to action their Bushfire Survival Plan on Catastrophic fire danger rating days. On such days, children should never be left at home alone or in the care of older children.
For those of us living in a bushfire prone area, the Country Fire Authority (CFA) advises that when Catastrophic days are forecast, the safest option is to leave the night before or early on the morning of the Catastrophic day.
What can families and the school community do to help us prepare?
- Ensure we have your current contact details, including your mobile phone numbers.
- Keep in touch with us by reading our newsletters, checking PAM, and by talking to your child’s teacher or any other member of the teaching staff about our emergency management plan.
- Make sure your family’s bushfire survival plan is up-to-date and includes alternative care arrangements in the event that our school is learning from home due to elevated fire danger or closed due to a Catastrophic fire danger. Further information can be found on the CFA’s website.
- Action your family’s bushfire survival plan if your own triggers are met. Our school community may be spread out across many areas and some families may be at higher risk than others. Your family’s safety is critical, so please let us know if you are actioning your bushfire survival plan and if your children will be absent on these days.
- If your child is old enough, talk to them about bushfires and your family’s bushfire survival plan. There is a link below with some activities to assist with this discussion.
